Group Portraits: My Style and Approach

Group portraits in wedding photography have changed a lot over the years. Brides and grooms looking for reportage and candid wedding photography often want more relaxed group shots than the traditional posed photographs of the different family groups. However, some family members (often parents) still like to have that style of image. With this in mind, I try to approach group shots in a number of ways…

I try to keep formal group shots to the minimal amount of time, and usually include just the bridal party and parents along side the bride and groom. After a few shots I like to sometimes stand a little to the side of the group, allowing other family members to take the photographs they want, but it also allows me to capture more relaxed candid group images which have a more contemporary and documentary feel to them.
